Boys' Lacrosse

Modified Boys’ Lacrosse
On May 22nd a strong Garrison team came down to visit our Sleepy Hollow modified Lacrosse team.  Sleepy Hollow fell behind late in the first quarter.  With the Horsemen down 10-0, it would have been easy for the team to give up and pack it in.  But, to no surprise, the young Horsemen came on strong in the 4th quarter with goals by 7th graders Dennis Maloy and Jorge Berenguer.  Win or lose, the Horsemen showed the pride that will keep them going for years to come.

On May 23rd vs. Rye there were Improvements everywhere!  That is what the Horsemen got out of a great game against a very good Rye Team.  After scoring 2 goals in the previous game, the Horsemen continued on their scoring by getting out to an early 1-0 lead.  The horsemen have shown some major improvements over the past several games.  Hopefully these improvements will lead to a victory against neighboring Irvington in a rematch of the first game of the season.  Come see the Horsemen take on Irvington on Thursday, May 25th at 4:15 at Sleepy Hollow High School.

Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse
The varsity boys’ lacrosse team was defeated by Byram Hills on Monday, May 9th by a score of 9-1.  Our only goal cam from Ronnie Bencosme, Defenseman.  Freshman John Lopez played well at goalie.

Our next game is on Wednesday, May 10th home vs. Tappan Zee.  (Posted 5/10/2006)

Lopez, Horsemen SHUTOUT Eastchester  (12 - 0)
Eastchester High School - 5/2/2006

John Lopez had thirteen saves to seal the shutout against the Eagles of Eastchester. He played behind a solid defense led by Connor Tompkins, Ron Bencosme, Dennis Bencosme & John Bonanno at Long Stick Midfield. On a very good defensive clearing day, Bonanno and Tompkins each had an assist.  Alex Silverman led the team in points with two goals that complimented his unselfish seven assists. Brendan Chillemi led all goal scorers with three goals and one assist. Gabe Plano had his second hat trick of the season. John Campbell added two goals, and Will Berkowitz & Candido Diaz each had one goal.

All of the Horsemen played a well-rounded game while they earned their second league win.   (Posted 5/10/2006)

HORSEMEN COMEBACK TO KNOCKOFF KNIGHTS (9 -7)
Sleepy Hollow High School - 5/3/2006

After trailing the Nanuet Golden Knights 2 - 5 late in the second quarter, Will Berkowitz scored two consecutive goals to bring the Horsemen to within one goal at the half.  John Campbell led the team with three goals. Brendan Chillemi and Will Berkowitz each followed with two. Ron Bencosme scored a goal and assisted two others. Kevin Blank rounded out the Horsemen scoring with an assist and a goal that ricocheted off of both pipes and in. The scoring efforts were enough to fend off a late two-goal surge by the motivated Nanuet team. The win gives the Horsemen a 3 - 1 League record and 7 - 5 overall.

Next week they will encounter two more league opponents as they travel to Byram Hills on Monday, and invite Tappan Zee for a contest on Wednesday.   (Posted 5/10/2006)

JV Boys’ Lacrosse
On Wednesday, April 26th the JV Boys’ Lacrosse team had its best game yet, but unfortunately came up short again - Hastings 5, Sleepy Hollow 0.   Even though Sleepy did not score they ran their offense well and got several shots off.  Sleepy has its next game Thursday April 27th at Clarkstown North.  (Posted 4/28/2006)

HORSEMEN FALL TO HASTINGS 8 - 7
On Wednesday, April 26th the Horsemen lost their first league game at Hastings. Down by three goals in the fourth quarter, the Horsemen made a final surge. Two late goals were not enough to complete the comeback. The Horsemen return to League Play on Monday, May 1st when they visit Peeksill.  (Posted 4/28/2006)

CLARKSTOWN NORTH RAMS HOLD OFF HEADLESS HORSEMEN   (SLEEPY HOLLOW 2 - CLARKSTOWN NORTH 4)
On Friday, April 21st, a day when the opposing goalie made twenty-five saves, the Horsemen succeeded at putting just two by him. This proved to be enough for North as the Rams were able to score a total of four goals in this "low" scoring "shootout".

Brendan Chillemi scored both Sleepy Hollow goals. A few millimeters and a very good day for the Rams' goalie were the only factors in separating the Horsemen offense from a more productive day. Nonetheless, it was a valiant effort from Chillemi and the rest of team.

The Horsemen look to bounce back with a win on Saturday, the 22nd as they visit former Assistant Coach Corveddu and his New Rochelle Hugenots.

HORSEMEN BOUNCE BACK WITH VICTORY OVER NEW ROCHELLE   (SLEEPY HOLLOW 10 - NEW ROCHELLE 4)
On April 23rd, the Saturday morning following the Junior Dinner at Sleepy Hollow, it started off slow for the Horsemen.  After a 4 - 3 halftime lead, the Horsemen showed a sign of awakening. Doubling the score in the third quarter was a testament to the young team growing together. Two more Sleepy Hollow goals in the fourth quarter, along with a well rounded defense only allowing one goal in the second half put the Horsemen up 10 - 4 for the final score.

John Campbell returned from an injury to lead the Horsemen in scoring with four goals on the day. Game Captain, Brendan Chillemi followed with three goals. Gabe Plano continued to warm up this season, contributing two goals.  Senior, Jon Saba threw in a textbook fast break goal to round out the scoring. Captains, Ron Bencosme and Alex Silverman each had three assists. Behind the strong defense, John Lopez stopped 9 shots during the win, and currently leads the league, averaging 6.55 goals against per game in his 337 total minutes between the pipes.

This cohesion comes at a critical time for the Horsemen, as they enter "League Play" on Wednesday at Hastings (4:30 PM). This will be followed by consecutive contests against Peekskill (5/1), Eastchester (5/2), and Nanuet (5/3) next week.

Before facing their League opponents, the Horsemen will visit Scarsdale at 4:30 PM on Monday, April 24th.

Come and show your support as the season HEATS up!!!! Go Horsemen!!!

face off at PelhamBencosme, Lopez Lift Horsemen to Victory in OT (Sleepy Hollow 4 - Pelham 3)
At Pelham, with the game tied at 3 goals apiece, the Horsemen went into Sudden Death overtime against the Pelham Pelicans. After one defensive stop, the Horsemen capitalized when the Pelican Goalie stepped away from the goal. He would recover, but not in time to stop captain, Ron Bencosme from sealing the win with a bounce shot that reached the top left corner of the cage for the Sudden Victory Goal.

Captain, Alex Silverman assisted three out of the four Horsemen goals. Junior, John Campbell scored two goals, & Brendan Chillemi the other.

Freshman, John Lopez gave another strong performance with 16 saves on the day. He played behind a solid defense featuring Ron Bencosme, Connor Tompkins, and Dennis Bencosme, making his first start.

Silverman LacrosseSilverman, Chillemi & Plano Lead Horsemen in Taming of the Tigers (7-5)
With the game tied at 5 goals apiece, Brendan Chillemi broke free for the game winning shot by way of a textbook face dodge. The goal came with the bonus of a penalty on White Plains. The slashing call placed the Horsemen in a one-man advantage situation for the remaining 25 seconds. Ron Bencosme won his 11th face off of the day, and got the ball into Tiger territory.  With 10 seconds left in the game, Gabe Plano completed his Hat Trick for the day.

Captain Attackman, Alex Silverman led all point scorers with two goals and two assists while Senior Captain, Ron Bencosme rounded off the scoring with another fast break goal.

Freshmen Goalie, John Lopez, showed his solidarity once again with 16 saves in his 46 minutes of play. Bencosme played between the pipes for the other 2 minutes while Lopez served a penalty early in the game.

The well-rounded performance puts the Horsemen at 2 - 1 going into their Spring Break. They return to play at 4:30pm on Monday, April 17th @ Nyack.

JV Boys’ Lacrosse
On Wednesday, April 5th the boys’ junior varsity played their first game against Arlington.  Arlington’s squad was thirty students strong, while Sleepy Hollow had eleven players.  Sleepy had a tough first quarter, re-adjusted the second quarter to shut down Arlington’s powerful offense, but unfortunately ran out of steam late in the game. Sleepy fell to Arlington 13-1, but never gave up!

Modified Boys’ Lacrosse
The modified boys’ lacrosse team is off to a strong start.  The season began on Monday March 27 with a large number of athletes coming out for the team.  Approximately 30 students are currently on the team.  We have a strong base of 8th grade leadership that will help us get better and work hard throughout the season. With the addition of a very athletic group of 7th graders, our team is looking good!   It looks like Sleepy Hollow Lacrosse is going strong now and for years to come!  We look forward to seeing you at a game.  (Posted 4/6/2006)

The Horsemen (1- 1) suffered their first loss of the season to the visiting Arlington Admirals on Wednesday, April 6th.  An Arlington 5 - 4 half-time lead grew to 11 - 5 by the end of the third quarter. Two Horsemen goals in the fourth quarter brought Sleepy Hollow to within four, but the comeback would fall short in the 14 - 7 loss. Penalties and lost ground balls would prove to be too costly in the teams' efforts.

Although the team suffered the loss, it was not without strong individual efforts. John Campbell had four goals on the day. Alex Silverman added two goals and one assist. Brendan Chillemi contributed a goal and two assists. Ron Bencosme added an assist, along with a strong defensive effort & another dominant face off performance. Freshman, John Lopez displayed his courage with 15 saves on the day against many uncontested shots.

Come show your support as the Horsemen host the White Plains Tigers on Friday, April 7th at 4:30 pm.  (Posted 4/6/2006)

Horsemen Win 2006 Season/Home Opener Against the Briarcliff Bears - (8 - 3) 4/3/2006
After the first quarter, Sleepy Hollow found themselves down 0 - 1. The Horsemen began to warm up with John Campbell's first goal with about five minutes left in the first half. Captain Alex Silverman added the following two goals, including one assisted by Gabe Plano, to give the Horsemen a 3 - 1 half-time lead.

Another Campbell score, and a goal from Senior Captain Ron Bencosme, assisted from Jon Saba, would give the Horsemen a 5 - 1 lead. The Bears rallied with two goals to end the third quarter 5 - 3.

Cambell would contribute two more goals in the fourth quarter, as well as assist Silverman with his third goal of the day. Silverman led the team in points with three goals and three assists, while Campbell led all scorers, finishing with four goals and one assist.

Freshman, John Lopez earned ten saves and gave up only three goals in his varsity debut.

Come support the Horsemen as they continue their week of home games as they face the Arlington Admirals on Wednesday, and host the Tigers of White Plains on Friday.
