Football

The Sleepy Hollow Modified football team finished their season last night with a great win over Westchester County powerhouse Rye 26-14.  The Sleepy Hollow Modified football team ends the season on a four game win streak to end the season at 5-1.  Sleepy Hollow jumped all over Rye by scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions, including two touchdown passes by David Martinez.  Martinez was able to hook up with Justin Best on a 38-yard TD pass, as well as a 44-yard TD pass to Bobby Smalls.  Smalls also added a TD run.  (posted 11/3/06)

The Sleepy Hollow Modified Football team defeated Woodlands 33-7 in its opening game of the season.  Kazon Stovall scored three touchdowns to lead the Horseman.  The defense was pitching a shut out till the 4th quarter.  Sleepy Hollow plays its home opener next Thursday versus Bronxville. The Horsemen Remain Undefeated!

On Saturday night, September 30th, the Sleepy Hollow Horsemen showed their might.  The visitor stands were overflowing with Horsemen fans to show the team their support.  It was Eastchester's homecoming game and the energy was high.  The Headless Horsemen came prepared to get down to business and show the Eastchester crowd that they were a force to be reckoned with.  They accomplished this and more.  Read the Journal News article below that captures a glimpse of the Horsemen's drive to win:

 SLEEPY HANDS EASTCHESTER FIRST LOSS

By KEVIN DEVANEY JR.  THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: October 1, 2006)

Somewhere in the middle of a pack of hulking Sleepy Hollow linemen, Hipolito Guzman was just trying to hold on to the ball and keep his feet moving.  Facing a fourth-and-one with six minutes left, Guzman took the snap on the quarterback keeper, buried his head and let the pile carry him past the 1 yard he needed for a first down.  The rest was a mixture of a worn-down Eastchester defense and a considerable amount of luck.  Guzman's surprising 37-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter sealed Sleepy Hollow's 14-0 win over the Eagles in a showdown of Class B unbeatens last night at Eastchester.  "Usually that play never works," Guzman said. "Sometimes we might get 1 or 2 yards. But I knew if I just followed my blockers, I could keep going to the end zone."  Guzman burst out of the pile at the 25 — drawing a gasp from the packed homecoming crowd — and went untouched into the end zone, a demoralizing blow for an Eastchester defense that had played so tough against a far bigger and deeper Headless Horsemen team. "I didn't think for a second that it would go for a touchdown,” Eagles coach Fred DiCarlo said. "We knew they were going up the middle, and right away they got a good push. They might have got a little assistance there for a second, and then the quarterback just burst out."  The touchdown sent the Sleepy Hollow sideline into hysterics. Players and coaches began wildly jumping around, and even usually reserved head coach Steve Borys ripped off his headset and flung it into the air.  Borys, a teacher at Eastchester and a former Eagles assistant, didn't take credit for calling the play, which was meant merely to get a first down and burn the clock with a 7-0 lead.  "The linemen came over and said, 'Forget your play, we're running 10 wedge," Borys said of the quarterback sneak. "All of them said it. We only needed 1 yard. They got us 37."  Sleepy Hollow's lines, both offensive and defensive, controlled the game throughout.  The defensive front, led by extraordinary play from end Trent Bronner and tackles Stan Martinez and Steve Amaro, held the Eagles (3-1) to just 46 yards in the second half. Bronner finished with nine tackles and a sack, and Amaro had eight tackles and one sack.  Linebackers Connor Tompkins and Welinthon Diaz each recorded six tackles, and cornerback Ron Bucci had an interception. Greg Kutzin had seven tackles for Eastchester.

The win positions Sleepy Hollow (4-0), which is ranked No. 4 in The Journal News Class B poll, for a League B-1 title and a top-three playoff seed. There is a strong chance that, if the Headless Horsemen beat Byram Hills and Panas in their final two games, they could get the No. 1 seed. (posted 10/4/06)

Horsemen post 14-0 Shutout.

For the first time this season, the Horsemen (Journal News rank #4) were able to hold an opponent to 0 points scored.  The Horsemen shutout Eastchester (Journal News rank # 3) on Saturday night in what is being called "the physical game of the year."

The Horsemen have allowed only 25 points all season, with only 6 points given up in the first half.  They are in the drivers seat to earning the #1 seed in the Section 1 Class B playoffs.  Let’s wish them luck and good "Defense" for their game this weekend at Byram Hills.  Kickoff is at 1:30pm at Byram Hills High School.

Hope to see you there!!!  (posted 10/3/06)

The Sleepy Hollow Modified Football team attended a scrimmage in Pawling this past weekend in order to tune up for the kickoff of their season.  Every player on the team finally got into real game time action and situations, in preparation for their opening game at Woodlands this Thursday.  The Modified Football team plays five games this season, including the last game against Rye under the lights!  (posted 10/3/06)

THE HORSEMEN WIN THEIR THIRD GAME IN A ROW!!

The Sleepy Hollow Horsemen remain undefeated with a 34-14 win over the Irvington Bulldogs on Thursday, September 21st.  Chris Cellante rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries in the first half of the game.  Dennis Bencosme rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.  Coach Steve Borys has been quoted as saying, "Our boys are starting to come together.  We are still making mistakes, but we're seeing growth each week."  Some of the Horsemen players were overheard saying that they were looking forward to this matchup because they knew some of the Irvington players.  "Some of the kids are related, and they did not want to be sitting around the Thanksgiving table talking about a loss.  It was really for bragging rights," coach Borys added.   The Headless Horsemen have only given up 25 points this season.  The starting line is doing its job early on in the games, which allows extra playing time for the all of its players.  Every touchdown made is the victory of not only one player, but of the entire team.  This means those on the field making their assignments, and those on the sidelines encouraging their fellow team players.   The defense is playing great with tackles from the linemen and interceptions from the defensive backs.  Conner Tompkins, Ronnie Bucci, Ben Gold and Trent Bronner have made key plays that have helped propel the Horsemen to victory.  They are a team with heart and soul.  On Saturday evening, September 30th, the Horsemen will face Eastchester at their home field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00PM.  All Horsemen fans are encouraged to attend.  It is a showdown no one should miss!  Hollow Hit!!!!!   (posted 9/25/06)

The Sleepy Hollow Varsity Football  team won its third consecutive game on Thursday, September 21st, beating their neighboring team Irvington.  It was another great team win, and the team continues to improve in every aspect of the game.  Next week will be another huge test for the Horsemen as they travel to Eastchester to face another undefeated team.  The action will take place under the lights on Saturday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m.  Come root on the team and help them continue their winning streak.
