Holiday Basketball Tournament A Big Success!!!

The 15th annual Sleepy Hollow holiday basketball tournament was a big success with the boys winning the championship and the girls finishing second.  All the Sleepy Hollow fans were proud of the way our student-athletes performed.  They showed a great deal of heart and spirit throughout the entire tournament and we would like to congratulate them on a great effort.  They made Sleepy Hollow pride shine.

Coach DeMarco’s championship squad played a total team game in winning the championship. John Foreman was named All Tournament, Spencer White was named Defensive Player of the tournament and Trent Bronner was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.  Congratulations guys.

On the girls’ side we would like to congratulate coach Nick Romeo on his first varsity win against Hamilton and we would like to congratulate the girls for their tremendous effort all tournament long.  They certainly played with the heart of a champion and they should be so proud of their performance.  Congratulations to Jackie Mottola and Turess Campbell for being selected to the All Tournament team.

On behalf of all the student-athletes we would like to thank our fans who showed outstanding spirit and support for both our teams.  The excitement that they brought into the gym certainly helped motivate our teams to greater heights.  Your support and sportsmanship was a big part of our teams’ success and helped to make the 2006 Holiday Basketball Tournament a big success.

We would be remiss if we did not mention two very special people who wholeheartedly support Sleepy Hollow athletics.  Due to their generosity this tournament has been a big success for 15 years.  With their financial support we have been able to host this tournament without spending one cent of Sleepy Hollow athletic money, with all proceeds going directly to the athletic boosters to support student athlete activities.

Sleepy Hollow Pride is on the Rise!  (posted 12/4/06)

Field Hockey: Sleepy Hollow runs unbeaten streak to eight

By TONY PINCIARO
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: October 25, 2006)

SLEEPY HOLLOW — Pearl River coach Melissa Heyde has a distinct memory of playing Sleepy Hollow during her high school career at Somers.

"We were playing Sleepy Hollow and we beat them 15-0 for Liz Gnida's 200th win," Heyde said.

How times have changed. Teams can no longer assume that playing Sleepy Hollow will yield a victory. Instead, Sleepy Hollow has been collecting its share of wins and, in the process, resuscitated the field hockey program.

Senior Maggie Schnog recorded a hat trick yesterday as Sleepy Hollow closed the regular season with a 6-0 victory over Pearl River.

Sleepy Hollow concluded the regular season with a 9-3-4 mark and earned its second consecutive sectional berth. Sleepy Hollow went 5-0-3 in its last eight games, including a 3-0 win over Mahopac and a 1-1 tie with Putnam Valley.

"This has been a crazy four years," Schnog said. "Our goal our freshman year was just to score a goal. Now this is amazing.

"Today was bittersweet in that we're happy we're moving on, but we all love to play field hockey."

Before the game, Sleepy Hollow athletic director Chuck Scarpulla honored the seniors with a special ceremony. It was appropriate considering what has been accomplished by the 11 seniors: Anna Oliva, Lindsay Zekus, Angela Martello, Roza Moshi, Christine Angevine, Chelsea Schoen, Emma Venturini, Ashley DelMonaco, Aileen McGee, Melissa Smutek and Schnog. They started together as freshmen and won just one game.

"It was really nice," Moshi said about the pregame ceremony. "We're like a family and worked hard to get here."

Sleepy Hollow rebounded from what it felt was a sub-par performance in a 0-0 draw with Panas with two quick Schnog goals.

Sleepy Hollow earned the game's first penalty corner, and Schnog responded. She picked up the rebound of an Angela Martello shot and opened the scoring at the 2:30 mark. Jackie Mottola, who scored a second-half goal, fed Schnog for her second goal 59 seconds later.

"The last game we didn't play that well so the first goal got us excited and fired up," Schnog said.

Sleepy Hollow coach Kelly Cronin saluted her seniors late in the game, putting them on the field together for the final five minutes.

"We all really appreciate what coach (Cronin) did and has done for us," Moshi said. "We all think highly of her."

Heyde had high praise for Cronin, with whom she coaches in the Futures Program. Heyde planned on pointing out to her players what Sleepy Hollow has achieved.

"Kelly has such enthusiasm and knowledge of the game," Heyde said. "This is something we just talked about. She told me this is where she was three years ago. Seeing that keeps us going and hopefully we can do the same here at Pearl River.

"My girls worked hard this season, stayed positive and never gave up. From Aug. 28 to now, they are better players."  (posted 10/25/06)

SLEEPY HOLLOW MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS

Ice Hockey begins Monday, November 6th

All other varsity sports begin Monday, November 13th

Modified begins Monday, November 27th

ALL ATHLETES MUST BE MEDICALLY CLEARED TO PARTICIPATE IN WINTER SPORTS.

Student/athletes need:

On Friday October 13th, the Sleepy Hollow Varsity Football Team will be walking for a cause.  They will spend the night before their homecoming game with some true heroes.  The team will walk in a 5K course in effort to help find a cure for cancer.   Please see the article written by By RICK CARPINIELLO of the Journal News.

Journal News  October 13, 2006

WHITE PLAINS — On the eve of one of its biggest games of the season, the Sleepy Hollow High School football team will march in a 5-kilometer Light The Night Walk tonight, starting and ending at Burke Rehabilitation in White Plains, in support of the 8-year-old daughter of assistant coach Ed Smercak.  The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide series of evening walks to build awareness of blood cancers and raise funds for cures. There has already been one such walk at Bear Mountain Sept. 30, and there will be another at Nyack Memorial Park tomorrow.  Several members of the team, its coaching staff and the school administration have had family members with recent cancer histories, and so head coach Steve Borys decided his undefeated Headless Horsemen would bus to White Plains and participate in their red-and-white uniforms a night before playing Walter Panas in a game that could be crucial to Section 1 playoff seedings. Coincidentally, walkers carry illuminated balloons — white for survivors, red for supporters — during the Light The Night programs.  Tonight's walk begins at 7 p.m. and concludes with fireworks.  According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Web site, leukemia claims more lives than any other cancer among children under the age of 20. Every five minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer, and every 10 minutes someone loses that fight.

TO ALL HORSEMAN FANS  - SENIOR RECOGNITION CEREMONY:

On Saturday, October 14th before our homecoming football game vs. Walter Panas we will be having our annual senior recognition ceremony.  At this pre-game ceremony we will be honoring our graduating seniors and their parents for being a large part of the Sleepy Hollow athletic family. It is going to be a great ceremony so please join us.

County unveils new materials to help schools deter the use of steroids by youth
As high school sports teams across Westchester County begin preparations for their fall seasons, County Executive Andy Spano is giving athletic directors and coaches what they asked for – more resources to deter  Westchester’s youth from making the same mistakes as some of these professionals.

Spano held a news conference Wednesday, Aug. 30 at Sleepy Hollow High School’s gym  to introduce a new county-produced video for high schools about the dangers of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Excerpts of this video were shown at the press conference, as well as student-produced PSAs about steroids.

“As recent high-profile cases have shown, the abuse of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes of all skill levels, and in a variety of different sports, is still a major problem,” Spano said. “Addressing this issue with both student athletes and coaches is an excellent way to prevent future generations from using these substances.  I’m committed to doing what we can to keep Westchester’s teens healthy by countering the negative influences of professional athletes involved in performance-enhancing drug abuse scandals.”

Last October, the county’s Summit on Steroids drew about 400 people who heard four medical experts and one former steroid-using bodybuilder speak  on how to detect, prevent, and find alternatives for performance-enhancing drugs. Athletes and administrators alike found the speakers informative and interesting  and school athletic directors asked that the information presented be made available for all their coaches and athletes each season.

To meet this  request and make the information available to a much wider audience, the Westchester County Office of Communications has  produced a video/DVD featuring highlights from this summit.  The video, which will be given to each high school along with a resource packet, can be shown by coaches to athletes across the county at the start of each sports season. There is no cost for the packet.

In September, the video will also be available at westchestergov.com/steroids.  (Posted 9/1/2006)
