The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns Names Dr. Raymond Sanchez as Next Superintendent of Schools
The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns are proud to announce that Dr. Raymond Sanchez has been selected as Superintendent of Schools. The Board of Education will convene at a special meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, to finalize the appointment of Dr. Sanchez, who stands as the finalist pending completion of this meeting. Dr. Sanchez will succeed Superintendent Chris Borsari who announced his retirement in November of 2022 and will complete his term on June 30, 2023.

On April 13, 2023, we hosted a Bullying and Internet Safety workshop for families, with the overarching theme of raising awareness, discussing what we do at the school level, as well as what we can do in partnership with families. Second Graders Learn about Advocacy through a Thoughtful Exchange with the Village of Tarrytown’s Mayor and Trustees
One of the wonderful benefits of being part of a historic community is that students in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns sometimes have the opportunity to learn about local history right in their backyard, or even right on their river. And because Tarrytown is a tight-knit community, our students sometimes have the chance to interact with leaders in their community. Case in point: when Ms. Losito’s second grade class decided they wanted to see a famous retired fireboat, they wrote letters to Village Mayor Karen Brown and The Trustees of the Village of Tarrytown.

Peabody Preserve Provides Outdoor Classroom for Students
“It’s a wondrous thing how the wild calms the child.” While the attribution to that quote is ‘unknown’ it easily could have been spoken by a variety of first and second grade Morse teachers whose students ventured into Peabody Preserve for class last Friday. “It’s so fun out here!” said first grade student Penelope. Her classmates quickly agreed as they darted onto the field to participate in a game of soccer.

Virtual Diversity of Dance
W.L. Morse students will participate in a Virtual Diversity of Dance on June 4th where students will learn about the power of embracing cultural diversity through dance. The interactive presentation features professional dancers who will present a series of movements from Jamaica, South Korea, Latin America and India and also explore the globalization of hip-hop.

Morse Students Take Virtual Trip Their Community
Coretta Scott King once said, "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” To help ensure that the students in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns learn about the community in which they live, each year they visit different organizations and community groups. This year, with changes necessitated by COVID, they continued that tradition by offering a virtual trip through the community.

Women’s History Month Provides Opportunity to Celebrate a Wide Variety of Women, Past and Present.
March is designated as Women’s History Month and students throughout the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns discovered more about influential women through a variety of lessons. At W.L. Morse, Sandra Tavares created a wall with photos of noteworthy women that included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Misty Copeland, Hellen Keller, Amelia Earhart and Malala Yousafzai. Students were encouraged to lead, learn, dance, inspire, write and educate others in a way similar to these role models.

Elementary School Music Teachers Inspire Students During Music Month
The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) designates March as Music in Our Schools Month to raise awareness of the importance of music in education. Although the pandemic has presented particular challenges for music classes this past year, our teachers continue to find creative ways to keep music a part of the curriculum. Two of those teachers joined the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns just this year; Mr. Jeffery Mizen teaches students in John Paulding and W.L. Morse and Ms. Abby Ferri is at Washington Irving.

Mayor Butler Meets with Students and Shares Important Lesson about Perseverance and Teamwork
“I think I can, I think I can….” Those four important words make many people think of the classic children’s book, “The Little Engine That Could” by Watty Piper. Although nearly a century old now, this inspirational message seems more relevant than ever. That is part of the reason that Village of Tarrytown Mayor Butler chose to read this particular book to second grade students at Morse elementary school.

Morse Mural On Display at Warner Library
Visitors to the Children’s Room at the Warner Library can now view art designed by students from the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns. During the 2018-2019 school year, first and second graders created a mural which art teacher Jeannette Dietz recently donated to the library.

The Art of Persuasion
First graders at W.L. Morse learned a valuable lesson in their recent writing lesson. The students discovered ways to write persuasively, a tool they can utilize throughout their lives.

Wordless Books
When you think about reading a book, more than likely you default to the concept of reading words on a page. However, there is another technique to support literacy that ENL (English as a New Language) teachers have been utilizing for years – wordless books. Teachers and students look at pictures, talk to each other and create the narration from what they see. Second grade teachers and Dual Language teachers at W.L. Morse received a series of wordless books to assist all learners.
