The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns Names Dr. Raymond Sanchez as Next Superintendent of Schools
The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns are proud to announce that Dr. Raymond Sanchez has been selected as Superintendent of Schools. The Board of Education will convene at a special meeting on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, to finalize the appointment of Dr. Sanchez, who stands as the finalist pending completion of this meeting. Dr. Sanchez will succeed Superintendent Chris Borsari who announced his retirement in November of 2022 and will complete his term on June 30, 2023.

Paws for Learning: WI Students Meet Service Dogs
Meet Logan and Haven, honorary WI students for the day! These service dogs, along with their trainers from BluePath Service Dogs, educated the students in their role as service dogs for children with autism.

Third Graders at Washington Irving Go on an Epic Adventure with the Earth Dome!
Third graders at Washington Irving had the opportunity to experience The Earth Dome, thanks to a grant from the PTA! This giant inflatable earth balloon stands 19-feet high and 22-feet in diameter, and is made of 24 huge panels silkscreened with photographs shot from satellites of the surface of the world. It truly is a unique educational tool that offers an immersive experience for students to learn about the geography and environmental issues of the world.

March Madness: Tournament of Books at WI Fuels Excitement for Reading and Character-Building
On March 1st, Washington Irving kicked off their March Madness: Tournament of Books with a fun basketball-themed assembly. Run similar to the NCAA College March Madness, the Tournament of Books features 16 books that support the Horsemen Pride Character Ed themes, which are values that the school promotes to help students develop positive character traits.

Washington Irving’s Fifth Grade Band Rehearses With A Special Visitor
Members of the Washington Irving fifth grade band had the opportunity to experience new techniques and learn from a different conductor at a recent rehearsal. Aaron Burgess, an Adjunct Professor of Conducting and Music Education at Ithaca College, joined the group as a guest conductor. WI music teacher and band leader Abigail Ferri invited Mr. Burgess to work with her students so that they could get a fresh perspective on their concert music in preparation for their May 25th concert.

Who Was…? A Third Grade Biography Unit Mrs. Christine Calvert and Mrs. Robin Suarez
The third grade ICT class recently wrapped up their Biography Unit. Students began the unit with a shared reading of the chapter book, Who Is Sonia Sotomayor? By Megan Stine. Together as a class, they jotted and shared notes of the major life events in her life. Students were quickly taken with her humble beginnings as a young Hispanic girl growing up nearby in the Bronx, learning to manage her diabetes at a young age and soon showing her hard-work and determination as she continued her studies while continuing to move up within the law field. Her message of not being afraid to ask for help and knowing that by working together, we succeed, resonated deeply with all the students as we are working together to come back from our interrupted education.

We Don't Worry 'Bout Testing
Students in Ms. Woods' third grade class worked to write a song parody of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" entitled "We Don't Worry 'Bout Testing." The kids learned about syllables, rhyme, and rhythm. It was a fun activity to relieve anxiety and stress that sometimes accompanies state testing

Science Rotation of Fun Experiments!
Four third grade classes participated in a Science rotation of fun experiments! Each day students visited a different teacher in the rotation. Mrs. Malinowski challenged students to make umbrellas out of household items. Once the students collaborated to create the best umbrella, Mrs. Malinowski used a watering can to simulate rain. Whichever umbrellas kept the small items on the tray dry were successful! Groups then reflected on either why they were successful or what they would do differently next time if they were not.

3rd Grade Winn Dixie Day
Third graders at Washington Irving celebrated Winn Dixie Day on Friday February 18th! The day was a culmination of a character study and literary essay unit centered around Kate Dicamillo's novel, Because of Winn Dixie. In order to prepare for the day's big event, students made various projects. Some students designed their own board games or trivia games, others wrote a script and produced their own play. Some third graders made character dioramas, candy creations, and even Bitmoji rooms replicating important settings from the book.

W.I. Student Gov't- Letters to Green Berets
At the W.I. February Student Government meeting, student representatives were visited virtually by Dan Rayburn, a former United States Air Force and Air National Guard. Dan spends many hours a month supporting fellow veterans and current Green Berets who are injured in the line of duty. Students got to learn about what a Green Beret is, what it takes to be in Special Ops as a Green Beret, and they were able to view different gear that Green Beret’s wear. Dan also showed the students some patches that Green Beret soldiers can earn and the meaning behind the symbols. Student Government students were able to ask questions as part of our discussion and then made cards and projects for Green Berets overseas to show our appreciation for their service.

Micro:bit
At Washington Irving this past week in Technology class with Mrs. Hak, the students in Ms. Creary's class followed the engineering design model to plan and create a holder for the Micro:bit mini computer. The students were told that the Micro:bit could be programmed to be a step counter, but that in order for it to be useful, the Micro:bit would somehow need to attach to their leg. The students worked in partners to solve this problem by designing and then creating a holder for the Micro:bit. They were quite inventive in the solutions they came up with!

Tarrytown Music Hall Visit
Mr. White’s class walked out the front doors into a brilliant sunny and frigid February morning. The class walked to the entrance of the Tarrytown Music Hall where we were greeted by Bjorn Olsson, the Executive Director. They paused to admire the Queen Elizabeth architectural details in the brick work and discovered that the building was built in 1885!

Third Grade Writing
Third grade students at Washington Irving have been writing up a storm! They have been busy working through a variety of pieces such as personal narratives, non-fiction books on expert topics, and opinion pieces. Since a traditional in-person Author Celebration was not possible at this time, the students in Mrs. Clark’s class shared their writing through a virtual Author Celebration. Parents and guardians were given individual links which they shared with extended family and friends, some of whom lived in different states across the country. After the audience enjoyed a formal presentation of the published expert book, writers also had time to share a process book detailing their individual journey through the writing process. 4th Grade Science
The 4th grade is currently learning about energy systems. They are using hands-on investigations to understand the relationship between the speed of an object and the energy of the object. They have learned that energy is conserved as it is transferred, and that changes in energy occur when objects collide. They will also be exploring energy and fuels that are derived from natural resources and how their uses affect the environment. This will lead to conversations about alternative energy sources and the pros and cons that are considered in decision making processes.

Lunar New Year
Mrs. Malinowski’s third grade class celebrated the Lunar New Year! Students learned about the solar calendar and why the Lunar New Year falls on a different day every year. They also learned which other countries celebrate this New Year and its many names. Students learned more specifically about the Korean New Year as Mrs. Lee, a student’s mother in Mrs. Malinowski’s class, joined the classroom virtually sharing a presentation, reading a book and showing a video of this celebration. The students loved learning about all of the traditions, especially the games played on this special day! The students each received a chocolate gold coin in a red envelope and had the opportunity to create their very own hacky sack! The students enjoyed themselves so much that they ended their celebration by writing a thank you letter to Mrs. Lee for teaching and including them in this special Lunar New Year celebration.

Annual Clothing and Housewares Drive Serves Community
On November 6th, Washington Irving Intermediate School held its annual “Gently Used Clothing and Housewares Drive,” an event that gets clothing and household items to those in need at a greatly reduced cost, while helping people clean out closets and reorganize their homes without putting items into the trash. (Donations are also accepted for goods that are taken.) The event, which was conceptualized and initiated by Washington Irving teacher Elisabeth Hickey, has been running since 2007 with the exception of last year due to Covid.

From Our Family to Yours
WI students partnered with Kendal on Hudson to write holiday cards for Veterans stateside and overseas. Students thanked them for their service, told them a little about their own holiday traditions or just offered a holiday wish. Together, the students in grades 3-5 wrote over 600 holiday cards. What a great way to offer a little holiday cheer!

Washington Irving Students Utilize Technology and Stay Active to Protect the Earth
As we begin a new month, we look back to April and how students in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns celebrated Earth Day. Fourth graders in Cathleen Caroleo’s and Jamie Stasiuk’s class created Earth Day World Art Poems where they incorporated technology, English Language Arts and physical activity to express their ideas.

Elementary School Music Teachers Inspire Students During Music Month
The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) designates March as Music in Our Schools Month to raise awareness of the importance of music in education. Although the pandemic has presented particular challenges for music classes this past year, our teachers continue to find creative ways to keep music a part of the curriculum. Two of those teachers joined the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns just this year; Mr. Jeffery Mizen teaches students in John Paulding and W.L. Morse and Ms. Abby Ferri is at Washington Irving.
