• TUFSD Curriculum Overview Kindergarten – Grade 12

    ELA Grades K-5

Throughout the year, children read and write quality literature in English Language Arts. Children are exposed to a wide variety of informational texts that provide facts and knowledge in the content areas. There is an increased emphasis on building a strong vocabulary. Our word of the week in K-2 and word of the day in 3-5 supports this initiative. With the support of their teachers, children learn that by reading closely and critically, they can comprehend complex text independently & proficiently.

Teachers in grades K-2 use Fundations to provide children with a foundation for reading and spelling. Teachers combine this program with district-developed curriculum maps for a balanced approach to teaching reading and writing. In grades 3-5, teachers implement the EngageNY modules. These modules focused on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in response to high-quality texts.  By using these sequenced, coherent progressions of learning experiences, teachers build children’s knowledge and understanding of major concepts and skills.

    English Language Arts Grades 6-8

The Sleepy Hollow Middle School English Language Arts department focuses on mastering the Common Core State Standards through the lens of the adopted New York State modules.  Students are exposed to a wide range of increasingly complex texts to build background knowledge and interest.

Each rigorous unit exposes our students to compelling topics which engage students in informational and literary texts, and emphasizes “author’s craft” in accordance with the rigor of the Grade 6-8 standards.  Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from both literary and informational text promote critical thinking. Each grade builds upon the last and provides the students with the necessary foundation to become lifelong learners.

    English 9-12

Core English classes at the high school level are designed to build students’ proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and are fully aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts.  Students closely read and examine classic and modern core works that span all genres, are Common Core text exemplars, and are within the established lexile ranges for each grade level. Considerable emphasis is placed on writing for argumentative, narrative and informative purposes. This expands students’ academic vocabulary, and ensures that students are building disciplinary knowledge as well as the capacity to grapple with increasingly more rigorous and complex texts.  Students produce various research-based products as they move from one level to the next, and there are ample opportunities for students to draw cross-curricular connections with other disciplines in authentic and applicable ways. The high school English department also supports essential school-wide efforts to promote literacy across the curriculum through initiatives such as vocabulary development, essential writing conventions, and establishing common practices among faculty members to maximize student achievement.

    Mathematics Grades K-5

In mathematics, the implementation of the Common Core State Standards has led to three major instructional shifts. Teachers concentrate on teaching a more focused set of major math concepts and skills. This allowed children time to master important ideas and skills in an organized way throughout the year and will help them prepare for their achievements in the next grade level. It also calls for teachers to use rich and challenging math content and to engage children in solving real-world problems in order to inspire greater interest in mathematics.

In grades K-5, we have adopted the enVision Math program to ensure alignment to the standards. Children in grades K-2 focus primarily on counting, addition, and subtraction. In grades 3-5, children will build on their knowledge to master multiplication, division, and fractions.

    Mathematics Grades 6-8

The Sleepy Hollow Middle School Mathematics Department focuses on deepening students’ understanding of the process as well as the product of mathematics by strengthening the ability to reason abstractly and quantitatively, constructing viable arguments, and by using appropriate tools and techniques strategically.

In addition, our curriculum provides students with a greater focus on fewer topics, links thinking across grades, and pursues conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application with equal intensity. The mathematical topics embedded in our curriculum include ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, geometry, and statistics and probability. We prepare students to be curious, logical, and critical thinkers in order to ensure college and career readiness.  The Big Ideas Textbook series has been adapted for grades 6-8 as a resource to ensure alignment to the standards. Many additional resources are incorporated as well.

    Mathematics Grades 9-12

Sleepy Hollow High School Mathematics is the culmination of the development of the major content in mathematics, from  Pre-K through grade 12. The standards throughout the years build upon each other, interconnecting and weaving to form a web of understanding.  Careful planning is used to further connect content across grade levels that creates a collective body of knowledge resulting from reasoning and interrelated set of principles.

The overall focus of high school mathematics is functions.  Embedded throughout the curriculum are ideas such as reasoning with equations and graphs, descriptive statistics, modeling with equations and functions, congruence proofs, similarity proofs, constructions, extending to three-dimensions, connecting algebra to geometry, trigonometry, polynomial, rational, radical relationships, trigonometric functions, drawing inferences and conclusions from data, and probability.  We prepare students to be inquisitive, rational, and critical thinkers in order to ensure college and career readiness.
