Attendance Matters

Every Day. Every Student.

At the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, we want every student to feel connected, supported, and ready to learn. Regular attendance is an important part of creating that sense of belonging and helping every student grow and succeed.

Every day at school gives students opportunities to learn, build relationships with teachers and peers, develop important routines, and stay connected to their school community. These daily experiences support not only academic growth, but also students’ social-emotional development and overall well-being.

Be a HORSEMEN HERO

Being a HORSEMEN HERO is about more than attendance. It is about building strong habits, making school a priority, and being part of our school community.

Attend Today. Achieve Tomorrow. Be a Horsemen HERO.

Why Regular Attendance Matters

Students who attend school regularly have more opportunities to:

  • Stay engaged in learning and keep pace with their classmates
  • Build strong relationships with teachers and peers
  • Develop consistent routines and learning habits
  • Participate fully in their school community
  • Make progress toward their academic and personal goals

Our district is committed to creating learning environments where all students can thrive, and regular attendance helps make that possible. This directly supports our district goal to develop strategic initiatives that reduce chronic absenteeism and ensure students remain connected to school.

When Absences Add Up

We understand that children sometimes need to miss school because of illness or other circumstances. However, even excused absences contribute to the total amount of instructional time a student misses.

Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of the school year—approximately 18 days in a 180-day school year. That can be as little as two days per month.

Because absences can add up quickly, we encourage families to keep track of attendance throughout the year and reach out early if getting to school regularly becomes difficult.

Families Are Our Partners

Strong attendance is a shared effort. Our district believes in building trusting and meaningful relationships among students, families, staff, and our community.

Families can support regular attendance by establishing consistent bedtime and morning routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours when possible, planning ahead for transportation, and talking with children about why being in school matters.

Most importantly, please reach out when your family needs support. Whether a student is experiencing anxiety about school, transportation challenges, health concerns, or another barrier to attendance, we want to work together to help.

Every day in school is another opportunity to learn, connect, grow, and belong.
