Sleepy Hollow Middle School students, faculty and administrators were honored for their commitment to the Lunch Buddy Program May 8, at Greenburgh Town Hall.
Seventh-graders volunteer their time during their lunch period making new friends with Stephanie Castillo and Kelly Whelan’s Communications and Life Skills Classes.
Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said, “This program should be replicated in schools across the country.”
Whelan started the program last year and it has grown from 20 Lunch Buddies to 200. “It has changed the whole environment of the school. It has improved by students’ social skills and students know each other when they walk in the hallways,” said Whelan.
SHMS students Joseph Ceserano, Christian Loja, Quinn Muller, Eva Poll, Talia Spector, and Douglas Winnikoff, who participated in the Lunch Buddies program, were excited to receive the recognition.
Assistant Superintendent for Learning Scott Dorn, SHMS Principal Joshua Whitham, Assistant Principal Richard Crawford, and RTI Coordinator and ELA Coordinator and teacher Jennica Vieira, and Special Education teacher Kelly Whelan all attended the ceremony at Town Hall.
