Congratulations to the Sleepy Hollow Pioneer team who competed on May 4, in track and field at the Special Olympics Regional Spring Games at West Point.
It was an inspiring day in which many ribbons and medals were earned. Sixth-grader Alex Tejada was awarded the Peter Cutignola Memorial Award which is presented to a participant who exemplifies the spirit of Special Olympics and demonstrates a strong relationship with their coaches.
Special Education teacher Kim Kaczmarek and Elvira Juarez, who coach the Pioneer team, presented the Medals to Create Miracles Award in memory of Marybeth McGuire-Andrus to an athlete from Nor-West Special Recreation. Marybeth was an outstanding Sleepy Hollow Middle School Special Education teacher and Pioneer coach who passed away in 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. The award has been presented every year and Marybeth's parents attended the ceremony.
The West Point cadets served as buddies with our athletes for the day, our athlete's families cheered them on and some of our SHADE (Sleepy Hollow Academy for Disability Education) interns as well.
