The Basics

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and the Foundation for the Public Schools for the Tarrytowns wants to ensure that all children gain the most they can from their education.

Since research shows that 80 percent of a child’s brain growth occurs during the first three years of life, the District is taking steps to assist community members employ what is called The BASICS before they enter school.

The initiative called Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow Basics teaches five principles: Maximize Love and Manage Stress, Talk, Sing, and Point, Count, Group, and Compare, Explore through Movement and Play, Read and Discuss Stories.

On May 17, approximately 40 community and business leaders and elected officials attended a meeting at the Warner Library to discuss how to make The BASICS a part of everyday life.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Gail Duffy said, “The goal is for everyone who lives in our villages to know what the BASICS are and follow these principles. We are excited about building a stronger, safer, happier community working together.”

Parents can utilize the principles throughout the daily activities. For example, a long line at the supermarket can provide an opportunity to count, group and compare.  he principles build a strong foundation for learning in an enjoyable way.

Thank you to BASICS Directors Regina Mignogna and Sharon Kirschner who are leading the initiatives in the community and organized the event.
