Veterans Exemption

Under state law, New York’s veterans are eligible for valuable property tax exemptions from local governments statewide. In addition, school districts have the option to allow the exemption which makes veterans’ property tax exemption consistent and applicable to school taxes.

The Board of Education of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns voted in July of 2018 to extend the school tax exemption to veterans living within the district. The Board resolution and supporting documentation was shared with our municipalities immediately following the meeting. Based on the established tax schedule in Greenburgh and Mt. Pleasant, the tax benefit will be realized in the 2020-21 school year. The amount of the exemption is determined by whether the veteran served in a combat or non-combat zone and also extends to Gold Star families. Veterans and qualifying families are highly encouraged to submit the form contained in the link below to the Assessor’s Office in either Greenburgh or Mt. Pleasant in order to receive their exemption.
