Sleepy High School Football Scores By Providing Meals to First Responders and Those in Need
The sports fields may be empty these days but the Sleepy Hollow High School Football team fights against an even bigger challenge – hunger. For the past several weeks, the team and its supporters have provided meals to say thank you and help those in need during the COVID-19 crisis.
The Boosters Club raised more than $8,500 in donations and provided more than 650 meals to the Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown Police Departments, Tarrytown EMS, doctors, nurses, childcare workers at John Paulding and town and village residents. The group has also purchased gift cards for families.
Football Coach Jorge Veintimilla said, “I try to teach the students to take care of the community who takes care of you. My phrase is ‘All In.’ Do everything you can do to take care of the community.” The goal is to reach $10,000 in donations.
In the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, we make it a point to talk to student- athletes, to remind our players that they should be mindful about what they accomplish on - and off - the field," said Superintendent Christopher Borsari. “Being a student in this school district means showing integrity and compassion, and I can't think of any better way for that to be demonstrated than through this effort."
The Boosters teamed up with local delicatessens and restaurants including: JP Doyles, J&G Deli, Roma Pizza, Hollywood Pizza, Capri Pizza, Bagel Emporium, Dominics Deli and Coffee Anyone.
The group reached out to school counselors, the Life Center and the Tarrytown Food Pantry to ensure that no one goes hungry.
