Message from the Superintendent

June 18, 2020

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff,

On behalf of the Board of Education, administration, staff, and students I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for taking the time to vote on behalf of our 2020-2021 school district budget.  The overwhelming backing  which was displayed through your vote is both humbling and energizing.  We truly appreciate the ongoing support of our students, particularly at this most challenging and unprecedented time.

As we conclude this school year, one which none of us could have envisioned last June, our efforts and focus are now wholly set upon the coming school year.  Although we all long for the day when we can re-open our buildings to our students, staff, and families, there are still so many variables and unanswered questions for which we must plan.  The passing of this budget will provide the flexibility required to navigate the evolving educational regulations, executive orders, and health and safety guidelines

In late April, we began planning for reopening with the creation of our District Recovery Team, consisting of several district administrators, to review best practices and design the planning structure and approach we would apply to this work. In addition, we have formed eight Recovery Subcommittees in the areas of; Scheduling and Logistics, Curriculum, Technology, Transportation, Safety and Facilities, Food Service, Health, and Mental Health and Wellness. There are over 80 staff members participating in these subcommittees based upon their knowledge, experience, and roll within the District.  To date, each subcommittee has had several meetings and are developing recommendations for action which will be shared with the Recovery Team and Board of Education.

To help inform our work and to get broad based feedback/suggestions we surveyed our staff last week and will be conducting Staff Focus Groups from June 22-24, 2020.  We have also developed a Learning from Home survey for parents which can be accessed by clicking this Survey Link.  Included in the survey is an invitation for parents to participate in one of seven Parent Focus Groups which we have scheduled at various times between June 26-June 30, 2020. I encourage all parents to complete the survey and to participate in a Focus Group if possible.  We are finalizing our structures for capturing additional student feedback/suggestions and will begin contacting students next week.

To ensure communication, we are also creating a special Recovery Planning section on our website as a resource for students, parents, staff, and community members to remain informed with regard to our developing plans. In addition, we will institute a Community Advisory Committee, consisting of parents, community leaders, and healthcare professionals to provide additional feedback and guidance during the development of our plans.  I will send out further details regarding both of these items in the coming days.

As we look ahead to this summer, I would like to once again express how incredibly proud I have been of our students, parents, faculty, staff, and community as we have collectively worked to adapt to the overwhelming changes with which we have been presented.  Beyond, being proud, I am truly thankful and appreciative of you all.  Please keep an eye out for future communications from the District and have a safe, happy, and healthy summer!

Sincerely,

Chris Borsari
