Message from the Superintendent

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff,

I want to begin this weekly update by thanking the community for its overwhelming participation in and response to our meetings and surveys. As we approach mid-August and are working hard on plans to reopen our schools, your input continues to be very important to us. 

Today’s weekly update provides information about the choice that we are asking each family to make between a hybrid and remote learning option for each student, travel advisories and quarantine information for families that may be traveling before the school year, and the district’s communications in the coming weeks. Following is the update for this week:

  • Reopening Plans:  This week, we determined that we can offer the community a choice between a Hybrid Learning Model and a Remote Learning Model. We are asking everyone to please respond to the survey that was issued this week and choose which model you prefer for your child. Survey responses must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, August 16th. The responses will be reviewed and confirmed by school staff next week. This information is needed to finalize our cohorts, schedules, transportation, and potentially reallocate staff. We also have posted our Remote Learning Plan and COVID-19 Testing and Contact Tracing Statement on the website as required by Governor Cuomo and the Department of Health.
  • Hybrid and Remote Learning: What is the difference between hybrid and remote? In brief, the hybrid model means that students will be divided into one of two cohorts, A or B.  Students in the A cohort will attend school in-person on Mondays and Tuesdays, while students in the B cohort will attend school on Thursdays and Fridays. When the A cohort is in-person, the B cohort will access their classes virtually. In the remote learning model, students will access all of their classes virtually, following their daily schedule  through the use of the Google Classroom and document cameras. This is described in greater detail in the recent Superintendent’s Message, the Remote Learning Plan and in this video, in English and Spanish. 
  • Parent Information Sessions: We have scheduled three information sessions next  week so that families can hear more about the learning options and student experience . We will also discuss health and safety, transportation, technology and social emotional learning. Questions can be submitted in advance using our Recovery Planning Feedback form which can be accessed by clicking here






  • Communications: As referenced above, we have developed a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to address the inquiries that we have been receiving from parents. We will continue to add to and update this document as new and additional information becomes available. Please also see the video describing the differences between the two learning models. I also want to remind you that all information about our reopening plans are captured in the Recovery Planning section on our website. Information about our Recovery Planning, as well as other district information, is also made available on the district's social media channels. 
  • Chromebook Distribution: The District has planned for a 1 to 1 Chromebook program for our students. This means that every student grades K through 12 will be given a Chromebook to use during the 2020-2021 school year. Distribution days are scheduled for Tuesday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 19th from 9AM-2:45 PM and Tuesday, August 25th from 4-7:45 PM. If your child borrowed a chromebook last year and has not yet returned it, you should do so at this time. The distribution will occur in front of Sleepy Hollow Middle School. Please see the Chromebook Agreement & Technology sign off sheet. To streamline the distribution process, we ask that you please print and fill out the technology sign off sheet (one for each child) before you arrive.
  • Travel Advisory: We know that many families and staff try to enjoy some time away in August prior to the start of school. We want to remind you that, due to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission in certain states, New York has issued a travel advisory for anyone returning from travel to states that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19. If you have traveled from within one of the designated states, you must self quarantine when you enter New York for 14 days from the last travel within such designated state, provided on the date you enter into New York State that such state met the criteria for requiring such quarantine. Please note that this is a state mandate.

As I’ve said in past communications, these plans are “works in progress” and will continue to evolve over the coming weeks. While we appreciate the need for families to make plans, we also have to be ready to make changes to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. I can assure you that we will continue to communicate regularly throughout this period.
