Message from the Superintendent

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff,

One of our top priorities this week has been to provide additional information to the community and staff through our parent and staff information sessions, a remote learning video and additional updates to the district’s FAQ document. Again, I want to thank the community for its interest, participation, and feedback.

This weekly update continues to provide information about our reopening plans, as well as resources to help families through the upcoming transition.

  • Reopening Plans: Results of our survey indicate that the hybrid learning model was chosen for about 70 percent of the students whose parents responded. The remaining 30 percent chose the remote learning model. This information has been extremely helpful as we are working to finalize our cohorts, schedules, transportation, and look for potential opportunities to reallocate staff. Families can obtain information about the learning models by watching our video in English and Spanish and reviewing our Frequently Asked Questions  document. We also have posted our Remote Learning Plan and COVID-19 Testing and Contact Tracing Statement on the website as required by Governor Cuomo and the Department of Health.
  • Communications:Thank you to everyone who was able to attend one of our Parent Informational Sessions. If you were unable to attend, recordings of the sessions are posted at the top of our Recovery Planning Page. We are also creating a document to respond to questions posed by the community during the information sessions. Those questions that are building- and grade-specific questions are being shared with the appropriate principals. I also want to remind you that in addition to the videos and FAQ, all information and resources regarding our reopening plans are captured in the Recovery Planning section. Information about our Recovery Planning, as well as other district information, is also made available on the district's social media channels.
  • Parent Information Sessions by Building: In order to provide parents with more specific information regarding each of our buildings, our principals are scheduling Parent Informational Sessions for the week of August 24th. The dates and times will be shared  on the website, as well as by each principal.
  • Cohorts: One of the goals of our hybrid model is to ensure siblings attend school on the same days. Students whose last names begin with the letters (A-L) will be in Cohort A and students whose last name begins with letters (M-Z) will be in Cohort B. We will be making adjustments and communicating with families as necessary to balance the cohorts.
  • Transportation: On Monday, August 24, 2020 parents of students who are eligible for district transportation will be emailed a confirmation from the Transportation Department.
  • Chromebook Distribution: The District has planned for a 1 to 1 Chromebook program for our students. This means that every student grades K through 12 will be given a Chromebook to use during the 2020-2021 school year. Many of the Chromebooks have already been distributed and we thank the families who returned a chromebook from last year and completed the proper forms. A final distribution day is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25th from 4-7:45 PM. If your child borrowed a chromebook last year and has not yet returned it, you should do so at this time. The distribution will occur in front of Sleepy Hollow Middle School. Please see the Chromebook Agreement & Technology sign off sheet. To streamline the distribution process, we ask that you please print and fill out the technology sign off sheet (one for each child) before you arrive.
  • Social Emotional Wellness and Resources: The district is offering a 60-minute workshop for parents and caregivers in partnership with Fordham University to provide an overview on trauma, feelings of connection/disconnection, support for their children, and to identify some key takeaways including coping strategies and mental wellness techniques. The first session, in English, is on Monday, August 24th and the second, in Spanish, is on Wednesday, August 26th. Both sessions begin at 6:30pm. An interactive dialogue will be led by Dr. Luz Torres. Please login through this link: https://fordham.zoom.us/j/91508089580
  • Travel Advisory: A reminder that, due to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission in certain states, New York has issued a travel advisory for anyone returning from travel to states or countries that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19. If you have traveled from within one of the designated states, you must self quarantine when you enter New York for 14 days from the last travel within such designated state, provided on the date you enter into New York State that such state met the criteria for requiring such quarantine. Please note that this is a state mandate.

As I’ve said in past communications, these plans are “works in progress” and will continue to evolve. While we appreciate the need for families to make plans, we also have to be ready to make changes to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. I can assure you that we will continue to communicate regularly throughout this period.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Chris Borsari
