Message from the Superintendent

August 25, 2020

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff,

I hope this email finds you and your family well!  As September is quickly approaching, I know that you are anxious to learn more about the coming school year.   The parent informational forums, meetings with staff, dialogue with administrators, and feedback from the Board of Education have provided a clearer sense of our next steps.   As we prepare for the reopening of our schools, the health and safety of our students, staff, and visitors, must remain at the forefront of our decision making.  In support of this we will be scheduling a phased reopening of our schools.

We will begin our reopening with remote learning for all students in grades PreK-12 beginning on the first day of school, September 10 and continuing through September 18. During this time, from September 15-18 we will also conduct age appropriate student orientations to acclimate our students and their families to their new teachers and buildings.  These morning sessions will give students the opportunity to meet their teachers and principals, take building tours, train on COVID-19 procedures, engage in social emotional learning and obtain technology, as necessary. During orientations one half of each Cohort will attend each morning, and remote learning will begin on a 3 hour delay for all students.  Additional building specific details will be provided by your child’s principal.

While the reopening of schools is an annual task which the administration and staff have successfully performed for many, many years, this year is certainly different.  We are adapting to many new requirements, and implementing new procedures and protocols, established by the New York State Department of Education and Department of Health.  We want to ensure that our staff are properly prepared and have opportunities to practice the new procedures and protocols prior to receiving your children in our schools.  The remote learning days prior to the start of our hybrid model will be used to address the following:

  • Training, practice, and revision of our new health and safety protocols
  • Conducting smaller, age appropriate student orientation programs at each school
  • Assessing our cleaning and sanitizing protocols with staff prior to students attending in-person
  • Providing additional professional development for teachers and staff
  • Teacher to teacher collaboration
  • Planning of personalized SEL activities to engage students
  • Refining online synchronous and asynchronous teaching practices

As we have said numerous times, our plans are constantly evolving and subject to change.  I would like to thank you for your understanding as we strive to create a safe and structured learning environment for all our students, staff, and families.

Sincerely,

Chris Borsari

Superintendent
