Message from the Superintendent
Dear TUFSD Families and Staff,
This week, we welcomed back our faculty and staff as we kicked off the 2020-2021 school year with our annual Superintendent’s Conference days. Among many activities, these days include training on our new health and safety procedures, and workshops focused upon technology integration, remote learning, trauma informed instruction, and equity in the time of COVID-19. Each of these days and workshops are designed to prepare our staff for teaching and supporting our students in this new environment. Most importantly, it was wonderful to see colleagues reconnecting and to have our buildings filled with energy once again. That said, I appreciate that we remain in an uncertain time and that returning to school comes with a variety of emotions. When I had the opportunity to greet teachers and staff, I spoke from the heart. I thanked them for their commitment to our students and shared that, on many days, I have felt overwhelmed by this undertaking. The challenges have sometimes felt insurmountable. On those days, the thing that has gotten me through is thinking about the students we serve. They need us to be there for them, now more than ever. You have my commitment that we will be.
Following are important updates for the week:
Instruction Begins on Sept. 10: All students will begin classes via remote instruction on Thursday, September 10, following two additional conference days for teachers on September 8 and 9. Your child’s building principal and teachers will provide you with specific details. Please refer to the phased reopening calendar for an overview of the opening month of school.
Health and Safety: I have included a link to a letter (English) (Spanish) from Mr. Scott Dorn, our District COVID Coordinator. His message provides an overview of the daily health and safety procedures and how parents can assist in keeping everyone safe and healthy. It also includes a Daily Health and Safety Checklist designed to serve as a reference and reminder for parents and students. It is critical for us to remember that our actions can have a significant positive or negative impact upon all those within our school community. Please do your part to keep us all safe and healthy by following these procedures.
Calendar: The district calendar will be sent to all families in the district during the week of September 7. For your planning, it includes the hybrid in-person instruction days for Cohorts A and B for the school year. Please remember that this calendar is subject to change and updates will be shared with the community, as necessary.
Free meals for students: As a result of our participation in the National School Lunch Program’s Seamless Summer Option (SSO) the TUFSD has been approved to provide free lunch to all students to start the 2020-21 school year. This program, which is funded through the USDA and State Education Department, will run through December 31, 2020, or until funds run out. There is no application necessary.
Bus and Lunch Passes: Bus and lunch passes will be mailed to homes next week. If your child is eligible for district transportation you should have received an email from our Transportation Department on August 24. Technology Support: The district has established an in-person technology help desk to provide support to parents who want to better learn how to use the Chromebook, log on to devices, etc. The help desk will be set up in front of Sleepy Hollow Middle School on September 8 from 4-6pm, and September 9 from 3-5pm. Furthermore, any student who has not yet received their Chromebook can pick one up on these dates.
