Women’s History Month Provides Opportunity to Celebrate a Wide Variety of Women, Past and Present.

March is designated as Women’s History Month and students throughout the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns discovered more about influential women through a variety of lessons.

At W.L. Morse, Sandra Tavares created a wall with photos of noteworthy women that included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Misty Copeland, Hellen Keller, Amelia Earhart and Malala Yousafzai. Students were encouraged to lead, learn, dance, inspire, write and educate others in a way similar to these role models.

Ms. Tavares encouraged her students to be resilient. “These women faced many challenges, but they did not give up. Challenges should not stop what is in your heart,” said Tavares during a lesson.

Students discussed the impact of such women in society and why it is important to learn about them.

“You can be like them and you can help people like they did,” said Alex Carela-Molina.

Classmate Maria de Mayor said, “We celebrated people who made things equal between men and women, so everything is fair, so we would get paid the same and have the same education.”

Music teacher Jeffery Mizen Music brought Women’s History Month to life through songs and videos. Students watched two performances, one by Esperanza Spalding, an American jazz bassist, singer and songwriter and another by Alison Balsom, an English trumpet soloist, arranger and producer.  He also showed them a collage of famous women in music.

“I want them to recognize women in music and recognize that women can do anything,” said Mizen.

John Paulding ENL teacher Patricia McGee shared the book “Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13,” by Helaine Becker with students in Ms. Praino’s and Ms.  Esposito's class. The selection was chosen as a mirror book – with the understanding that children should see individuals like themselves in books, especially women of color.
