TUFSD Approves Budget for 2022-23 School Year; Public Vote to be Held on May 17

The  Board of Education of the Tarrytowns Union Free School District last evening unanimously approved the budget that will be presented to voters for the 2022-23 school year. The $86,430,432 budget remains within the tax cap limit with an estimated tax rate increase of 1.38% in Sleepy Hollow and a 3.1% tax rate reduction in Tarrytown.

“This budget strikes a balance between providing a range of opportunities to educate, challenge, and support our students across all schools while still being sensitive to the needs of our taxpayers,” said Superintendent Christopher Borsari. “This budget was also developed with the goal of fulfilling our commitment to diverse learning experiences, social emotional learning, and hands-on, engaging activities.

Among the stated budget themes for this year are to: maintain appropriate K-12 class size and course offerings; continue support for after-school and summer programs to address learning loss during the Covid pandemic; reduce the district’s reliance on the appropriated fund balance; maintains a focus on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; identify district transportation needs, particularly with the establishment of a Child Safety Zone in Sleepy Hollow; and continue Tarrytown’s highly successful Columbia University Teachers College Writing Project.

The ballot will include four propositions, as follows:

  • Proposition 1: School Budget Proposition for 2022-23 in the amount of $86,430,432.
  • Establishment of a capital reserve fund to which the District will commit surplus funds a maximum of 10 years and $12 million.
  • Approval of expected transportation costs related to the identification of a Child Safety Zone in an area of the District where students currently walk to school, but should be bused for safety reasons.
  • Two (2) Board of Education Trustee seats.
