Superintendent's Update: October 7, 2022

October 7, 2022

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff:

The safety of our students, faculty and staff is job one here in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns. To help ensure that everyone is prepared for an emergency situation, we hold numerous emergency response drills each year. Please take a moment to review this School Emergency Information Guide (English) (Spanish) which we developed to provide parents and community members with helpful information regarding emergency preparedness and response. Today’s district-wide emergency evacuation drill was one example of how we prepare for emergency situations and test the effectiveness of our plans. During this drill, administrators and teachers conducted and checked their procedures regarding attendance, class rosters, communication, and required equipment. We are appreciative of our students and staff for their cooperation and focus during today’s drill.

As it pertains to safety, you are aware that yesterday we, in conjunction with our partners in law enforcement, made the decision to close Sleepy Hollow Middle/High School out of an abundance of caution following a perceived threat posted in a high school chat group. I want to reiterate my thanks and appreciation to the students, staff, and parents who contacted the District and police to express their concerns. “If you see something, say something” is a necessary and effective step toward ensuring safety for all. We will continue to educate students about the consequences of what they post online and the digital footprint it creates, and encourage you to engage your children in ongoing discussion around these issues.  We appreciate your continued support on this important matter.

Following are important updates and information for the coming weeks:

Schools Closed in Observance of Columbus Day: This is a reminder that our schools will be closed this Monday, October 10th in observance of Columbus Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, October 11th.

Homecoming Events and Food Drive:  Next week is Homecoming at Sleepy Hollow HS and our students will celebrate with various events including grade level competitions, athletic contests and a Pep Rally/Bonfire. Please click on this link for a schedule of events. Each team will also be hosting a food drive to support the SHHS Food Pantry.  We encourage you to come cheer on our players, and at the same time, support the SHHS Food Pantry by bringing a shelf- stable item.

TT/SH Parent Child Center (PPC): WJCS will be opening a Parent-Child Center at the Tarrytown Community Opportunity Center at 105 Wildey Street. This free program is designed for parents and their young children (birth-4 years old) to meet, learn, and play with other families in the community.  Please click this link for an informational flier.

Please Contribute to the Vision of a TUFSD Graduate: As part of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns’ continuous improvement efforts, we are in the process of defining the most important goals for learning we believe all students will need as they navigate a future that will certainly be different from the one previous generations have faced.  We are going to call this our Vision of a Graduate and it will focus our efforts on the most important skills and dispositions we believe all learners will need to succeed in their life, learning and work beyond school.  We are seeking input from the broader Tarrytowns educational community to inform our decisions on this work.  Your feedback is important to us and it could take as little as 5 or 10 minutes to be part of the process.  When contributing thoughts and ideas, please just add one skill or disposition per thought.  Any personally identifiable or hurtful language will be immediately removed from this community conversation. All you have to do to get started is click on this link – all contributions are anonymous.  Thank you in advance for participating.

Peabody Preserve Fall Programs:
The Peabody Preserve is a wonderful 39 acre site, owned by the TUFSD,  located on Route 9 at the north end of Sleepy Hollow.  The Friends of Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom (PPOC) are thrilled to once again welcome the community for after school and weekend activities during the Fall.  For more information and to sign up for one or more of the amazing activities, please click on the following links (Spanish) (English).

Horsemen PTA: Our Horsemen PTA wants to remind you that they are always looking for members and volunteers across each school and grade!  Help us help your children by becoming a dues paying member of the Horsemen PTA - click here to join, and/or by signing up here to volunteer at any of our many PTA events and initiatives.  We appreciate all of your support.  Cheers to a great school year!

COVID+ Reporting: Please report any COVID positive cases to your building principal and school nurse.

Rapid COVID Tests: If you are in need of additional tests for your child, please complete the following Google Form and we will be able to provide you with additional tests.

Looking ahead to next week, we are excited for Spirit Week at SHHS.  I hope you’ll consider joining me and your community members to celebrate Hollow Pride. Go Horsemen!  Enjoy the long weekend.

Sincerely,

Chris Borsari
