Superintendent's Update: November 11, 2022

November 11, 2022

Dear TUFSD Families and Staff:

Veterans and Election Day are two extremely important opportunities for us to pause and recognize our freedoms here in the United States, as well as how our democracy was established and has evolved over the past two and half centuries. As educators, we take great pride in teaching our students about citizenship and their responsibilities. In support of this, our Rho Kappa Honor Society students developed and shared information on all New York candidates in the 2022 election and held a mock election at the high school. Hundreds of students participated, taking time to learn about the candidates and the issues, before casting their votes.

As we pause today to observe Veterans Day and send our deep appreciation to our veterans and their families, I want to also thank our youngest students for sending their thanks - literally - to veterans through handwritten notes. In addition to practicing their vocabulary and spelling, students learned about the sacrifices of our veterans and current military personnel, the meaning of freedom and appreciation for the varied efforts required to ensure it for all. You can see some of these letters on our website and social media.

There was also a special dedication to beloved Tarrytown resident and WWII veteran Chick Galella at the top of the hill in front of Sleepy Hollow Middle School commemorating where Chick, with help from his family and SHMS students, led the annual planting of hundreds of American flags in honor of Veterans and Memorial days. This effort was conceived and led by Dylan Smith, a SHMS 8th grade student.  Students have also continued collecting items for United for the Troops.

Following are a number of important updates and information about next week:

Horsemen Happenings: We are proud to share our Fall edition of Horsemen Happenings.  This digital newsletter highlights some important news and accomplishments within the District. Click here to view the latest edition.

High School Fall Drama: Sleepy Hollow High School is proud to present Arsenic and Old Lace, on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th.  Our students and staff have been hard at work in all facets of production and will be putting on a performance you won’t want to miss. Please read the attached flier for more information regarding the performance date and times.

Washington Irving Wizard of Oz Residency: The District is very thankful to the Tarrytown Music Hall for providing this free theater residency to our Washington Irving students for a sixth year.  Over 60 students are participating and will be performing the Wizard of Oz at the Music Hall on Thursday, November 17th at 7:00pm.

SHMS Toys for Tots Drive: Sleepy Hollow Middle School is excited to partner with the United States Marine Corp to donate toys in its inaugural Toys for Tots collection. For more than 30 years, the primary goal of Toys for Tots has been to help bring the joy of the holidays, and send a message of hope, to America's less fortunate children. Thank you for helping our community extend some holiday cheer through your gift of a new toy, book, or piece of clothing to those in need. The collection ends December 13th. You can find additional details on this flier and please reach out to Ms. Devon Badolato at if you have any additional questions.

Peabody Preserve Fall Programs: The Peabody Preserve is a wonderful 39 acre site, owned by the TUFSD,  located on Route 9 at the north end of Sleepy Hollow.  The Friends of Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom (PPOC) are thrilled to once again welcome the community for after school and weekend activities during the Fall.  For more information and to sign up for one or more of the amazing activities, please click on the following links (Spanish) (English).

COVID+ Reporting: Please report any COVID positive cases to your building principal and school nurse.

Rapid COVID Tests: If you are in need of additional tests for your child, please complete the following Google Form and we will be able to provide you with additional tests.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and join me in thanking our veterans for their service.
