Honoring Our Veterans
We pause today to observe Veterans Day and send our deep appreciation to our veterans and their families for their sacrifice, love of country, and willingness to serve for the common good.
Our students, beginning with our kindergarten students, learned about the importance of recognizing our veterans and expressing appreciation. They did so by creating handwritten notes and drawings to express their sentiments. In addition to practicing their vocabulary and spelling, students learned about the sacrifices of our veterans and current military personnel, the meaning of freedom and appreciation for the varied efforts required to ensure it for all.
There was also a special dedication to beloved Tarrytown resident and WWII veteran Chick Galella at the top of the hill in front of Sleepy Hollow Middle School commemorating where Chick, with help from his family and SHMS students, led the annual planting of hundreds of American flags in honor of Veterans and Memorial days. This effort was conceived and led by Dylan Smith, a SHMS 8th grade student. Students have also continued collecting items for United for the Troops.
