6th Graders Create Collages Around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Principles

Our 6th graders have been creating collages for the 2023 New York State Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Student Exhibition as part of Ms. Harrison’s Art class.  The students worked hard to illustrate a quote that reflected Dr. King's Six Principles and Steps of Nonviolence. Using photo fragments, paint, colored pencils, paper, and other items, the students created narrative interpretations of the great Civil Rights leader’s quotes.

Students worked in diverse teams and modeled the principles of Dr. King, including tremendous collaboration and conflict resolution when there were disagreements.  Their completed pieces will be exhibited online on a NYS.gov site in January, as part of the New York State Education Department’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Art & Essay Exhibit.

During last year’s submission, Sleepy Hollow Middle School submission made the front page of the state-wide digital exhibition.  We are so proud of the hard work and dedication of all of our students, and grateful to Ms. Harrison for encouraging her students to ensure that their work can provide meaning for the viewer, and stand on its own to suggest a larger concept.
