Winn Dixie Takes Over: Third Graders Celebrate with Creative Projects and Canine-inspired Delights!

"It's hard not to immediately fall in love with a dog who has a good sense of humor."  Third graders at Washington Irving also fell in love with Winn Dixie, celebrating with a Winn Dixie Afternoon on Friday, April 21st. Kate DiCamillo's beloved novel Because of Winn Dixie inspired the special literary event.

Winn-Dixie helps his owner Opal navigate life in a new town by exploring themes like compassion, friendship, and courage. Students and teachers transformed their classrooms into Winn Dixie galleries featuring scenes from the novel, bulletin board displays, art installations, and even thematic party food!

As a culminating activity, students created an interest-based project to contribute to their classroom gallery. The young readers designed their own board games; others became playwrights and wrote scripts. There were even candy creations, Lego dioramas, and technology-driven trivia game shows!
