Superintendent's Update: May 12, 2023
May 12, 2023
Dear TUFSD Families and Staff:
The month of May continues to bring us an array of activities and lots of outdoor time, including visits to businesses around the community and to our outdoor classrooms at the Peabody Preserve. Some of our Morse students were even fortunate enough to witness ducklings hatching from their shells this week. It’s always a pleasure to have our students journey outside of the traditional classroom to learn about the community and gain new experiences. To that end, thank you to those in the community, including our first responders and local business owners, who took time to meet with our students.
Also, please remember that on Tuesday, May 16th, the polls will be open from 7:00am - 9:00pm at Morse and Washington Irving to allow voters to consider the 2023-24 school year budget, a proposition to authorize transportation for children within the Child Safety Zone established by the Board of Education, and candidates for the Board of Education. I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the documents that are on our website for additional information.
Following are several important updates and information about the coming weeks:
Journey to Wonderland Performance at Peabody: This Saturday, May 13th from 1-2pm there will be a student play in the woods! The Peabody Preserve Outdoor Classroom is proud to present a special community led event: a production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND! Nothing is as it seems in Wonderland - or in Peabody Preserve! Led by local director and theater educator Peter Royston, this unique production will be shown along the beautiful paths of Peabody Preserve. The performers - adults, middle school and elementary students from the community - will perform scenes from Alice in Wonderland at different points on the Preserve's winding paths while the audience follows along, going through the mysterious woods with the characters.
Benefit Concert: The Hudson Valley Wind Ensemble and the Sleepy Hollow High School Band will be holding a combined concert on Sunday, May 14th at 4:30PM at the Kusel Auditorium of Sleepy Hollow HS. The concert will benefit the Sleepy Hollow Performing Arts Boosters. Please see the attached flier for additional details.
SHHS Science Research Symposium: The SHHS Science Research Program will be hosting the 26th Annual Science Research Symposium on Wednesday May 17th beginning at 7:00pm in the Kusel Auditorium. Please come and hear about the incredible science research projects and new knowledge being created by our high school students. Please RSVP to Michele Zielinski at firstname.lastname@example.org if you plan to attend.
Rivertowns Parents Event: The Potent Truth: This event, sponsored by the Rivertowns Parents is open to all and will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 in the Sleepy Hollow High School Auditorium from 6:30pm-8:00pm. We invite you to participate in a conversation on the current drug and alcohol trends affecting today's teenagers. Our discussion will cover a range of topics, including high-potency marijuana, edibles, contaminants, prescription pills, and the potential effects of these substances on the developing brain and body. As parents, it is essential to stay informed and learn effective ways to talk to our teens about these issues.
Rivertowns Parents Event: Disordered Eating: The Rivertowns Parents and Irvington PTSA will be hosting a virtual presentation entitled, Eating Disorders: What to Know, What to Do at 7:30pm on Monday May, 22nd. Please see the attached flier (Spanish) (English) for further details.
Class of 2023 Yard Signs: Please use this Class of 2023 link to show your Sleepy pride. Other members of the community can purchase a sign or make a donation so that all members of the Class of 2023 receive a sign. Our goal is to give a sign to every member of the class of 2023. Signs will be distributed to seniors after the Rose Ceremony on May 25th, and delivered to other schools / elsewhere in the community after the Rose Ceremony. Thank you to the PTA for organizing this sale, and for helping offset costs to make it accessible for more families.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm Mother’s Day message to the moms who do so much, day-in and day-out, to care for others. I hope you have a beautiful day surrounded by loved ones and that you are able to take time to do what brings you happiness.
