Managing your time, making friends and getting along with your roommate. These were just some of the topics new Sleepy Hollow High School alumni shared with current seniors.
A panel of a dozen graduates from the Class of ’18 participated in today’s Alumni Dialogue Day in the high school auditorium.
The alumni attend private and state schools from around the nation including: Villanova University, Boston University, Iona College, Pace University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, The State University at New Paltz, and the University of South Carolina.
SHHS students had the opportunity to ask the new freshman questions. They wanted to know how to choose the best college.
“Sometimes it is a feeling or a vibe,” said Alexis Javier. “But you also want know about the college and its location and weather.” Javier attends Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. The former students also suggested students reflect on their own learning style – whether they like large or small learning environments.
Tuition can also play a role, so the seniors were advised to apply for scholarships and grants and to do their best to gain credits from their Advanced Placement or AP exams.
While discussing new friendships the panel agreed that joining clubs is one of the best ways to meet new people.
With the new-found freedom of college also comes responsibility. “If you don’t manage your free time it can get away from you,” warned Emma Tucker, now a freshman at Villanova.
Students also met alumni June Amore, an author and film writer from the class of ‘12. “It is all about choices. It is all about who you want to be and investing in yourself.” Amore would like to start a scholarship for two SHHS seniors in honor of his father and make a donation to the multi-media classrooms.
